This project came about when the founder of this project, Helén Edling was imagining a expanded use of the old family-cottage that belongs to her father and his brothers but which is rarely used and is living its life in the forest by itself most of the year (whatever houses get up to when being left by themselves..)
So, in the summer of 2005, In the Middle of NowHere residency & exhibition project was launched for the first time and invitations went out to a group of artists from different backgrounds, working in different mediums etc.
The house and its surroundings is the theme/subject for the exhibition as well as the venue for it. The main idea is to let artists with no first hand experience of Sweden work in these surroundings, collaborate with and live alongside other artists for some time, get inspiration, and challenge themselves to create new work. The curatorial idea to actually place the Exhibition in ‘Nowhere’ is that the exhibition is in real life more or less non-accessible for gallery-goers or visitors (even if a few brave ones have been coming by boat over the lake), but since this website is setup following the exhibition, it will be accessible for everyone online.
